Your standard king mattress is also known as the eastern king mattress, since there’s an additional type of king called the California king and, obviously, California is to the west.

The King is the largest of the standard mattress sizes, providing couples with spacious comfort even when sharing the bed. Firm King size mattresses are designed for couples where both sleepers enjoy a medium-firm to hard level of comfort, or where one or both sleepers need solid support to avoid waking up with a sore back. Side sleepers generally do not do well on firm mattresses, as the dense sleeping surface is too unforgiving for the outlying hips and shoulders. But if you and/or your partner enjoys/needs a firm sleeping surface, you won't beat the spacious luxury of a King.
